Tom’s research has focused on reducing vibration, and increasing fuel economy of gas turbine exhaust diffusers. Lab research and management of turbine exhaust diffuser and cooling fan flow research projects for industry and government ventures of diffuser flow has resulted in a capability of over 100 lb per second air flow. Research conducted also resulted in development and testing extremely durable silencers for Organic Rankin Cycle centrifugal turbines used in the geothermal power plants. Current acoustical projects include noise monitoring around power plants for neighbors and in central Nevada, for wildlife concerns including the sage grouse.
